Unlike Mackenzie, Scharnhorst either did not feel the need or was simply not capable of solving the apparent contradiction posed by the sight of industrious Indians.
In the same letter Scharnhorst also appears to borrow his characterization of sepoys from British comrades:
These black troops have become brave over a period of time, with constant persuasion and severe discipline, and they are well dressed, but when they lack the good command of a European officer and the example of European regiments, the courage of the sepoy disappears, especially when they have to fight Europeans.81
